Bet ya thought I was gonna go religious on ya, huh? Nope. It’s just a Miner’s Candle. Possibly one of the weirdest plants around. There are a bunch at East Portal near the dam. And last year we saw plenty on Dunraven Trail — but that is still closed due to the flooding last fall. It must be pretty blown out, which is too bad for a lot of reasons, one of which is that it is one of the best wildflower hikes in the area. I drove up there to see if I could sneak in, but I was so demoralized by the damage I saw on the way — poor Glen Haven really got rocked, and since it is off the beaten path for tourists, repairs have been slow — that it just felt disrespectful to hang around. I greatly admire the wonderful volunteers and “hardhat angels” I saw working on the repairs in this area.
