The amazing Rocky Mountain Iris bloomed in mid-May, but since I hadn’t started my blog yet, I wasn’t able to post it back then. I wish you could have seen it! Low, damp areas throughout RMNP and the town of Estes Park were full of light purple-blue iris. The fields around Mary’s Lake Lodge and the Beaver Meadows entry to RMNP were particularly full this year. I even found one white iris — never saw that before. Rocky Mountain Iris is smaller, thinner and more delicate than its domesticated garden-loving cousin. I like to think that this is the true iris — before chemical enhancement and selective breeding — and therefore the most perfect.
